XJ Electric Successfully Developed World's First Ultra-High-Capacity UHVDC Flexible (VSC-HVDC) Converter Valve

Recently, XJ Electric has successfully developed the world's first ±800 kV / 8 GW Voltage Source Converter based High-Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) transmission converter valve. It has successfully passed the 800 kV high-end converter valve type test, setting a new global record for the capacity of converter valve equipment in the field of VSC-HVDC transmission and consolidating China's leading position in UHV VSC-HVDC technology.

Independently designed and developed by XJ Electric, this product, will be applied to the Gansu to Zhejiang ±800 kV UHV VSC-HVDC Transmission Project (hereinafter referred to as the Gan-Zhe Project) – a key project under China’s "Electricity Transmission from West to East" . As the world's first to utilize independently developed 8 GW full-capacity UHV VSC-HVDC transmission technology, the Gan-Zhe Project is also a key project under China's national 14th Five-Year Plan for electric power development. The project will convert Gansu's high-quality coal and abundant wind and solar new energy resources into electricity for transmission, leveraging the green energy advantages of the central and western regions to meet local economic development needs. It has set multiple world firsts in system construction, advanced control and other aspects, which will effectively guarantee the absorption and outbound transmission of Gansu's large-scale new energy and ensure the safe and stable operation of the complex large power grid in Zhejiang. Once operational, the project is expected to transmit over 36 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to Zhejiang annually, holding profound significance for building a new energy system and ensuring national energy security.

In the process of equipment R&D, XJ Electric focused on the construction requirements of a new power system dominated by new energy, continuously advancing research and development in VSC-HVDC technology suitable for the reliable transmission of large-scale new energy. The technical research team of XJ Electric successfully overcame key challenges such as optimized design for high-capacitance limit explosion prevention and seismic optimization design for high-load valve towers. In the production phase, XJ Electric strictly controlled the quality and reliability of components, actively responded to and completed the special improvement work on the quality control of core components such as the converter valve's DC capacitors and bypass switches, ensuring valve reliability from the source. In the test phase, XJ Electric took the lead in conducting and passing over ten types of insulation and operational tests, including valve support insulation, insulation between valve terminals, and maximum continuous operational load tests. It also carried out over ten reliability tests, such as power cycling tests for the converter valve and electromagnetic compatibility tests for power modules. A series of specialized tests have fully guaranteed the advancement and reliability of the converter valve equipment, providing crucial experimental verification support for the construction and commissioning of the project.
